Charleston Record Expo

In March of last year, Monster Music conducted Charleston’s first record convention in at least 15 years – the Charleston Record Expo. Vinyl record sellers from a multi-state area convened in one location, selling a wide variety of music, allowing younger record buyers, old school record collectors, and anyone just curious the opportunity to browse a huge and diverse collection of records.

The turnout was immense, much larger than anticipated. Record Expo II was held last September, and now the Expo is a biannual event.

As you may know, while physical music sales overall have declined in the wake of digital downloads, vinyl has made a profound and sustained comeback. That’s right, vinyl - LP records. Not just once, or twice, but every year since 2007:

Year

2007

15%

2008

90%

2009

32%

2010

14%

2011

3.6 million records were sold in 2011, numbers not seen in that format in over twenty years. Pretty cool, huh?

People are rediscovering, or discovering for the first time, the satisfaction of the warmer, fuller sound on vinyl, not to mention the fun that goes along with the artwork, discovering unknown gems, and playing records with friends. For a lot of us, vinyl never went away.

This Charleston Record Expo will be held Saturday March 24th, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, at 946 Orleans Road in Charleston, in West Ashley Shoppes next to World Market. Admission is free and open to the public, and we actively encourage everyone to attend! The better the turnout, the more we can expand the event. We currently have room for approximately 25 vendor tables, and we are right at the threshold of having to find a larger venue to hold it. Vendor tables sell out quickly, so it’s the attendees who have the final say if they want it to grow!

The vendors hail from all over – mostly in the Carolinas but some are coming from as far away as Detroit and Pensacola, Florida. Their collections will largely consist of LPs, but there will be 45s, 12” singles, as well as collectable CDs, DVDs, magazines, and artwork. There will be $1 records, $100 records, and everything in between. It’s not just for collectors, it’s for anyone who appreciates listening to music the old fashioned way – on record!

Please help us spread the word!
